Kansas Teen Wins Regional Best Teen Chef; Will Compete in National Cook-Off

TEEN CHEF FROM KANSAS WINS REGIONAL COOK-OFF;
Runners Up from East Mecklenburg, Greensboro
Karsen Brassard, an 18-year-old senior from Prairie Village, Kansas, won the Gold Medal and a $3,000 scholarship to attend The Art Institute of Charlotte in the regional cook-off competition this past Saturday (March 18) at The Art Institute of Charlotte. Karsen will compete May 5 for the national title of The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef 2005 and a full tuition scholarship to attend AiCH.
The second-place Silver Medal was won by Ken Aponte, a senior at East Mecklenburg High School; Noel Sosa of Greensboro took home the Bronze (3rd place) Medal. The two won scholarships of $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. Each of the regional participants who attends The Art Institute of Charlotte also will receive a culinary kit includign knives and student chefs' attire worth about $1,000.
Eight high school seniors competed for the regional title at The Art Institute of Charlotte, and the first-place winner will join 19 other competitors in the national cook-off May 5, 2007, at The Art Institute of Dallas.
This is the fifth year of the Best Teen Chef competition at The Art Institute of Charlotte. Three of the four previous local winners finished within the top seven places nationally. The International Culinary Schools at The Art Institute of Charlotte began its culinary arts program five years ago and offers a Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Management, an Associate of Applied Sciences in Culinary Arts and a certificate in the Art of Cooking.
