Overview

The Kitchen & Bath Design program at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh was created in response to demand for specialized design professionals equipped to work with educated, knowledgeable homeowners. Kitchen and bathroom designers understand the importance of design and style as well as the functionality and practical needs of a living space.

Modern bathrooms combine functionality and safety concerns with an ever-growing demand for creating larger, luxurious spaces within the home.

The Kitchen & Bath Design program at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh enables students to concentrate their studies and ultimately fill a career niche within this specialized portion of the residential market.

Studio courses are designed to provide students with realistic project scenarios that advance in complexity at the curriculum progresses. The program will prepare graduates for entry-level positions in the ever-changing design industry.

Professional experience will be gained through a required 160-hour internship designed to expose students to real projects prior to graduation as well as help students build professional relationships.

Students will graduate with an interview-ready portfolio demonstrating both creative and technical problem solving skills necessary to complete residential kitchen and bath projects. Career opportunities for qualified graduates of the Kitchen & Bath Design program include positions such as kitchen/bath designer, kitchen planner, installation coordinator and manufacturer's representative. Careers exist working for retail showrooms, distributors, cabinet shops, multi-branch retailers, manufacturers, fabricators, installers, manufacturer's representatives, dealers, builders/remodelers and decorative plumbing and hardware. Opportunities also exist with homebuilders, specialty firms, and residential-product retailers.

The Art Institute's degree program was created with the guidance of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) with a curriculum model.

The mission of the associate's degree program in Kitchen & Bath Design is to prepare students to become specialized kitchen and bath professionals in the interior design market. Students will complete courses focused on the design and planning, construction and systems, and the management and technical skills of kitchens and bathrooms. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to take the first phase of the NKBA certification exams.
