Location-based entertainment, gaming, film and video, architectural, virtual reality, broadcast television, advertising, education and law are among the industries that benefit from the skills in traditional and digital animation, design, illustration, compositing and 3D computer modeling developed by graduates of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Media Arts & Animation program. Students at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh begin the Media Arts & Animation program with a foundation in drawing, color, character design and computer applications. Under the guidance of an industry-experienced faculty, students examine advanced 2D and 3D animation principles as well as story development, background design, scenic layout and special effects. Along the way, students learn and become experienced with program specific software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Discreet's 3D Studio Max and Alias/Wavefront’s Maya. Finally, students create a digital portfolio that showcases their conceptual and creative skills in traditional and digital 2D and 3D techniques and abilities. The portfolio will enable students to showcase their collection of skills to potential employers upon graduation. Entry-level opportunities for Media Arts & Animation graduates to seek upon graduation include computer-generated lighting, compositing and rendering, as storyboard artist; texture artist; computer modeler; computer-generated special effects artist; broadcast graphics artist; background painter, clean-up artist; forensic artist and video post-production artist. In addition, the need for 2D and Flash animators continues to grow in order to support Web-based corporate communications, e-commerce and marketing.
