This course builds on the fundamentals learned in DPH100 Digital Photography Level 1. Students will gain and apply expanded knowledge of techniques and creative process to develop their visual expression in the art of digital photography. Image manipulation and layout is introduced as a fundamental aspect of a digital workflow. Students will also be exposed to various options for image transfer from camera to computer and importing them into various software programs. This course will also cover digital printing techniques, color management, and introduce students to the various industries in photography. |

• Welcome, Introductions and Course Review • Digital Camera Fundamentals - Introduction to the Pixel - Introduction to Digital Camera Operation • Biographies • Shooting Assignment – Location TBD • Review of Portfolios from DPH100 & Ideal Images for discussion • Presentation: Portfolios & Biographies
Week 2 • Lenses and Creative Focus Techniques - Depth of Field, Optical Resolution, Focal Length - selective focus techniques • Creative Applications in PS - Depth of Field in PS, Blur, Perspective Control, Wide Angles, Photo Merge • Online Research: locating resources. • Shooting Assignment – Location TBD • Review & Presentation: Assign 1
Week 3 • Viewing and preparing images (The Computer as Photo Lab) • Workflow - The Computer as Photo Lab - File handling and Browsers • Editing - In camera editing - resizing, resolution - Photoshop, layers, history - Image Correction: gamma + color • Lab: Workflow and Editing • Review & Presentation: Assign 2
Week 4 • Composition - Importance of effective composition, Rule of thirds, Perspective, Balance/repetition, Cropping and Framing, Visual Elements • Online Libraries, File Sharing • Shooting Assignment – Location TBD • Review & Presentation: Assign 3
Week 5 • Lighting Basics - Types of light: specular/reflected, diffused/transmitted, ambient - colour quality of light, histograms & curves, bracketing • Lighting: available + artificial • Tone: highlights + shadows • File Formats + Resolution • Shooting Assignment – Night Shoot • Review & Presentation: Assign 4
Week 6 • Professional Overview - types of photography, amateurs/pros - preparation, equipment • Editorial Photography - narrative ability, location portraiture, travel, equipment/lighting, file management, intellectual property, Copywrite laws • Shooting Assignment – Location TBD • Lab: Photoshop Solutions & Techniques • Review & Presentation: Assign 5
Week 7 • Advertising/Commercial Photography - Layout & project concept - File delivery - Editing/archiving • Lab: Photoshop Solutions & Techniques • Review & Presentation: Assign 6
Week 8 • Architecture Photography - Lighting, location, equipment - PS editing & perspective techniques • Lab: Photoshop Solutions & Techniques • Review & Presentation: Assign 7
